ETL process helps in getting data from heterogeneous data sources, transform the data by applying the biz rules or cleansing the data according to needs of the organisation and writes in to target (generally database) .

ETL is a process that extracts the data from different sources system then transform the data like applying , calculating and concatenation etc and finally load the data into the data warehouse.

Extract : Data is extracted from source for example sales force , google Adwords etc into the stacking  area acts as buffer between the data warehouse and source data may be coming from multiple different source. its likely in various formats and directly transferring the data to the warehouse may result in corrupted data the stacking area is used for data cleaning and organisation.
